After 6 long months of arm wrestling, we’ve picked out two books of poems to publish in 2017 from this year’s open reading period. Serenade by Brooke Ellsworth + Testify by Simone John. We picked them out just for you, for all of us.
BROOKE ELLSWORTH is the author of the chapbooks Thrown (The New Megaphone, 2014) and Mud (dancing girl press, 2015). Recent work can be found in The Volta, jubilat, The Seattle Review, Spork Press, inter|rupture, among others. She currently lives in Peekskill, NY. Serenade will be her first full-length collection.
SIMONE JOHN is a poet, educator, and freelance writer based in Boston, MA. She completed her MFA in Goddard College in 2014. Since then, Simone has devised youth poetry workshops examining topics from the values of hip hop culture to the power of poetry as a form of protest. When she isn’t working with talented young people, Simone writes documentary poetry that blends current events with her lived experiences as a black woman in the United States and abroad. Her work has been published in The Pitkin Review and Elohi Gadugi Journal.
